Oracle is reportedly planning significant workforce reductions that could affect up to 45,000 employees, according to people familiar with the company’s internal discussions. The figure is far higher than the 20,000–30,000 job cuts previously confirmed by the company.

Sources say the restructuring is closely linked to Oracle’s growing use of artificial intelligence systems within its Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). Over the past several months, the company has been testing AI agents designed to automate many routine database administration tasks.

These automated systems are reportedly capable of handling functions such as system maintenance, performance optimization, and backup verification—work that was previously performed by large teams of engineers. One example cited internally involved a group of 47 database administrators whose roles were largely replaced by automated systems, leaving only a few senior architects to oversee the technology.

Employees familiar with the transition say internal data suggests the AI tools can detect roughly 94% of database issues automatically, significantly reducing the need for large support teams.

The changes may also extend to solution engineering teams that design custom deployments for enterprise clients. According to sources, new AI-driven development tools can generate database architectures and migration plans in hours instead of the weeks previously required.

If the larger estimates are confirmed, a reduction approaching 45,000 employees would represent one of the largest layoffs in the technology sector in recent years.

Oracle is reportedly offering severance packages that may include extended salary support and accelerated equity vesting for some affected workers.
